The intent of the master plan for this garden space was to create a natural landscape in harmony with the surrounding woodland. Here, nature is the inspiration for informality with the exploration and expression of open and closed spaces. Present is a variable display of different shade enviroments and topography nestled on three sides by a 1500 acre park. Our challenge was how to create the serene garden our clients desired from a canvas covered with years of neglect, rocky dry
soil that was void of plants and overshadowed by large overgrown trees, steep slopes, and deteriorating stone walls. |
| In keeping with the desire of the owner to create a garden that is private, enclosed, and protected, we have borrowed from the Eastern Principles of informality, asymmetry, and naturalness. |

The Japanese principles of framing views, using selected plantings and movement, and combining them with the natural New England landscape to complete the scene was the ultimate goal. It is a garden composed of paths, places, and vantage points. |
| Intimacy, form, pattern, and texture are the keys to success in this woodland garden. The use of native plants indigenous to local conditions and combining them with some exotic plants that are natural associates will extend seasonal interest and all will share the different kinds of shade. |

Throughout the site you will find benches, lanterns, water features, and birdhouses which add function and beauty to this very personal garden. Another Aisian philosophy of reusing existing elements for new purposes is relevent in these photos. Many of the features were created from existing materials on the site. We just enhanced and transformed them into useful and architectural elements like walls, paths, lanterns, benches, and water basins. |
| Water provides the natural way to relax and is evident throughout the design. The pond is a natural backdrop. There is a natural stream that runs through the property, a koi pond with waterfall, and bubbler near the front entrance. |

We incorporated sitting areas to both enjoy the sounds and views throughout the garden. We included paths with different stone, many from the site, and created landings for sitting, viewing, relaxing, contemplating, and just taking in the surrounding enviroment. |
